Who could have predicted ten years ago at the Ordination to the Priesthood of Damian Martel SPS, that he would be celebrating his 10th anniversary as Parish Priest in the same church – St. Mary’s Nairn. The Celebratory Mass held at 7.00pm on the 7th July 2017 was concelebrated by deanery priests Dean Rev. James Bell, Fr. Andrzej Harden SJ, Fr. Andrzej Niski, Fr. Domenico Zanre, with Fr. Mark Savage OSB from Pluscarden. Fr. Isaac Yaw Nsiah and Deacon Vincent McQuaid came from Elgin, but were not on the altar as they arrived a little later. There were a good number of Ministers and representatives from Churches throughout the Nairn area, and from Cawdor in the congregation.
Fr. Andrzej Niski proclaimed the Gospel and Fr. James Bell preached the homily in his own inimitable, and engaging way (please see link below).
At the end of the mass, Father Damian thanked everyone who had helped make the celebration possible, with a special thanks to his mother and late father, for their loving guidance, and for nurturing the family faith, and to his siblings and extended family for their encouragement and support.
There was a reminder to his parishioners of the tasks ahead, repeating once again our new African word – Harambee, that we may all pull together and pool our skills to tackle the projects that lie ahead.
After Mass the congregation made their way across the road to the Old Parish Church Hall (the use of which was kindly gifted to us for the occasion by the Rev. Alison Mehigan) for light refreshments. An excellent end to a wonderful evening.
